It steals my heart every time I look back on it. This photograph alone made me wish to return again to the icy shores within the Antarctic Circle. I loved the solitude this iceberg presented as it floated in a void between sea and sky. The print called for more—it should not sit alone—it’s part of a wider story, a wider landscape, that called for a wider body of work. Seeing the sky change a chameleon of hues contrasted against the world’s largest ice shelf made me appreciate the awe of our untouched world and our small scale on the edge of this planet. Over recent years, I have turned away from the setting sun—seeking softer use of colour in my work—but on this trip to Antarctica I was drawn to staying up all night to wonder at the sky’s spectacular tones. They challenged my perception of the space between each one; just as David Nash’s 49 birch trees at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park had when I visited them a few weeks before. I was fascinated by how they sat in relationship to this landscape and each other—each interaction changed by a small step left or right. I experienced a deep engagement in nature when working to understand the interplay of these trees with one another—tying to solve this visual puzzle that expresses my relationship with this landscape by the relationship between each of them. This rare case, it was the colours. Not just a single vivid splash, this interwoven tapestry offering a perfect canvas to this young oak tree’s graceful form. How could such colours sit together within one moment? Their relationship imperfectly balanced, contrasting each other. In much of my work, I don’t seek bold colour; preferring the soft pastel or even grey skies to a vivid sunset, waiting for late autumn leaves over peak fall colour. Nearly 20 years later, I have not been working on the coastline much lately; I was unsure how I would reengage with the coast here—I no longer feel the chase from capturing sunset colours that I once did. From the moment I stepped onto these wild beaches, I felt drawn to the history that has sculpted them as much as time and tide. For me, standing here feels like you have stepped back in time in the same way as walking down Edinburgh’s Royal Mile—where both landscape and history become alive in a moment of another time; feeling unchanged—while we simply try to negotiate our own path laid out in the sand before us. Some might say that’s not very productive, and I agree – I’m not a very productive photographer – but I’m fine with that. Creating art isn’t about productivity. I’m happy if I come away with ten works in a year, not ten for one trip, not ten from one day. It’s easy to look at a portfolio and think how productive an artist is, but often so many years have been spent building it. I’m happy to pass up a pleasing photograph to have a pleasing moment reflecting on the landscape. I save my creative energy for a moment that speaks to me, a moment. I have something to say. Creating work that is personal and meaningful doesn’t arrive quickly. Every time I head out into the landscape, I can’t always find what I wish to say – what I wish to express from my connection with this place. Sometimes the landscape will be shouting loudly, making a bold statement as it vividly paints the sky above it at dawn, trying so hard to be heard and noticed. As hard as it tries, it still might not speak to me. I’m happy to wait for the moment I find something I want to say, to say something about my connection with this place, my connection with Mother Nature. This often comes from a moment when I find some solitude in this place, some stillness in my mind, a moment of silence in this busy world that allows me to be content with the landscape. I feel it wasn’t the landscape, conditions, or the light that stopped me from making more work this winter. Even though these trees are not native to New Zealand, they make me feel at home here; they have integrated into this landscape just like I have. I loved the interplay of the branches I worked with while making this photograph, sitting them together to perform a beautiful symphony. These days I’ll often simply sit and enjoy a beautiful sunset over a grand vista and not feel the need to photograph it. If I do, I don't want sunset to dominate photographs as I like to work with soft and subtle colours within my work. This evening, a big lenticular cloud was positioned high over Mt Cook, being formed by the strong north-west wind that made setting up my tripod a challenge. At sunset, this impressive “Nor'west arch” ignited to a fiery pink; it was stunningly beautiful but felt far too vivid as an expression of what I wished to capture. I did, however, enjoy the softer tones that were sitting above the northern horizon—the scene felt calm and balanced. The birch’s white bark blends its tonal range into the landscape—a fine line of contrast; a light brush stroke within this virgin snowscape. It’s satisfying when you can remove all these distractions to see things clear and simple. While an interesting subject, it did not provide a photograph easily and I had to work hard to align the placement of all the layers within the frame. Like all good compositions, it was a challenge to compose.
